Federal budget forms are not the only part of federal budgets which are different. The information expected in a federal budget justification is also more specific, and must comply with the requirements of the federal agencies as well as being reasonable, allowable, and allocable. This session will not only discuss how the federal government defines each of these criteria, but also provides a wide variety of examples on how to justify each of these criteria by cost area (personnel, travel, etc.) and methods for documenting how you are defending these criteria after you have received your federal award. This session will also talk about how research-related budget justifications are used to directly tie the tasks conducted in the research to each person and cost expenditure in the budget.
What you will learn:
- The federal definitions of reasonable, allowable, and allocable
- How to justify costs within each federal category
- To ensure post-award documentation documents these areas so expenditures are not rejected by local and federal auditors
- Unique elements of research grant budget justifications
- Common expected terms used in research budget justifications
- How to tie research aims, objectives, and tasks directly into the budget justification
