Who Should Attend: Nonprofit professionals who want to be prepared to navigate the grant post-award process with confidence.

This course provides a practical framework for evaluating grant opportunities beyond basic eligibility. Participants will examine how pre-award decisions, including program design, staffing assumptions, and budget narratives, create long-term post-award compliance and management responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on assessing organizational readiness, financial and administrative risk, and capacity before submitting an application to ensure grant funding strengthens rather than strains operations.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate grant opportunities for alignment with organizational mission, strategic priorities, and operational capacity prior to application submission.
  • Analyze how pre-award program design, budgets, and narrative commitments translate into post-award compliance, reporting, and grant management responsibilities.
  • Identify the systems, staffing roles, policies, internal controls, and documentation practices required to successfully manage a grant award prior to submission.
  • Assess how proposed budgets and cost narratives impact post-award financial management, including allowable costs, documentation requirements, and time and effort tracking.
  • Evaluate administrative, fiscal, and programmatic risks associated with grant awards to determine whether anticipated benefits justify compliance and management obligations.
  • Apply a structured decision-making framework to determine when to pursue, defer, or decline grant opportunities based on capacity, compliance readiness, and long-term organizational impact.
